North Carolina 7th Grade End-of-Grade (EOG) ELA Practice Test

Figurative language refers to the use of words and expressions that convey meanings beyond their literal interpretations, often employing figures of speech such as metaphors, similes, personification, and hyperbole. This type of language enhances writing by creating vivid imagery or conveying emotions and ideas in a more impactful way. By using figurative language, authors can evoke a deeper understanding or connection with the reader, as it often reflects abstract concepts or comparisons that aren't immediately obvious.

In contrast, the other definitions provided do not capture the essence of figurative language. Technical writing is focused on clarity and precision, serving specific functions rather than artistic expression. Definitions are straightforward explanations of words or concepts, while descriptive language focuses on detailing physical traits or characteristics without the layers of meaning that figures of speech provide. Thus, option B accurately encapsulates the essence of figurative language by highlighting its nature of conveying meaning through various literary devices.
